What Is Sharad Purnima?



Sharad Purnima (Kojagari Poonam) is the only day when the moon is at its fullest i.e. all 16 Kalas (Phases) of the moon are present. It is said that on this day moon shines extremely bright with all 16 phases of waxing and waning. It is celebrated on the full moon day of Ashwin month as per the Hindu Calendar.


Mythological Stories




There are many mythological stories associated with the day of Sharad Purnima. Below are a few that I know about:


1) It is said that on this day, Lord Krishna does Maha Raas with Radha and other Gopi's. On listening to the divine tune from Krishna’s flute, Gopis reached the forest to dance. Lord Krishna created several look-alikes to dance with each Gopi.


2) Another story is of Goddess Lakshmi. On the night of Kojagri Purnima, Goddess Lakshmi visit every house asking, Ko jagrati?; the meaning, is anyone awake. Those who are awake are blessed with happiness and prosperity.


3) According to many believers, Goddess Lakshmi was born on Sharad Purnima.


4) In Odisha, Sharad Purnima is marked as Kumar Purnima and celebrated as Lord Kartikey's birthday.

There are many theories and researches that have stated that the moon has tremendous effects on human bodies. The day of Sharad Purnima is given so much importance is because on this day the moon is closest to the Earth. It sprinkles the elixir of life upon people through its rays.
